We are where we are thanks to entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs see an opportunity, invest, grow their business, and with it, the
industry they work in. In 1951, it was a group of entrepreneurs that shared a common interest in a thriving industry that formed the Automotive Retailers Association.
Each era has its opportunities and challenges, and the past 70 years have truly thrown everything imaginable at our industry, good and bad. We have not only survived these challenges, but we have grown more robust, leaner, and ready to take on the next decade. What better way to kick it off than with an actual in-person 70th Anniversary Celebration and AGM, including a chairman’s reception, casino night, luncheon with guest speakers, gala, and the first-ever pedal car auction? Now add a charity golf event in support of our foundation, and take the whole thing to Whistler.
The ARA team has been planning this exciting, commemorative event for the past six months, and we are really looking forward to seeing everyone in person again. This is a not-to-be-missed event, so make sure you

come celebrate with us.
For a kid In the 1950s, to have a pedal
car was a big deal. Those classics are collected and worth a lot of money these days. They bring back memories of a bygone era, and we thought it was time to revive it by challenging school students to “design—build—learn” by making their own pedal car. These cars are now complete, and the results have far exceeded our expectations both in design, build, and in educational opportunity. The cars will be displayed and auctioned off at our gala night auction in Whistler this fall, another reason not to miss the ARA’s 70th Anniversary Celebration.
Dejla Sabanac, with support from the ARA team, held a Women in the Automotive Industry event in May. The turnout was impressive, as was the positive message— “See the opportunity, seize the opportunity.” The ARA’s goal is to encourage women to recognise and take advantage of all the numerous opportunities and roles available to them in this diversified, growing sector. Events like these are integral to showcasing just how important women are in this industry, and to help women who are interested in joining
the industry overcome concerns, doubts, or misunderstandings. They are needed, valued, and welcome.
David Ribeiro organized the first-ever ARA Collision & Glass Trade Show. He too had the full support of the ARA team. Our suppliers came to the table, literally and figuratively. Together they made it a resounding success. Members had a chance to talk business and meet face-to-face. Sponsors have already committed to coming next year and some are looking to be at Whistler.
A lot has been done, and we have more to do. We continue to advocate for fair compensation and terms of service, in particular for towing, glass, and collision. You will have seen some movement recently in this regard. This is encouraging; however, it falls short of solving the obvious shortfall when compared to other regions, data over time, and other marked segments operating in a consumer-driven competitive market. The government is aware of our situation and is listening. It is not over. We are working aggressively on your behalf, and there is more to come. n
